Before you post a job advert, or reach out to a Recruiter, ask yourself:
Do we really know what we want and need in this hire? 🤔
Not just the job title, duties or the salary bracket.
But the person - the gaps they’ll fill, the problem they’ll solve, the long-term value they’ll add, and the team dynamic they’ll be a part of.
In Block Management, when a Property Manager gives notice, there’s pressure to move fast. But in the rush to replace them, it’s easy to default to hiring a like for like replacement without pausing to evaluate what your business and the portfolio this person would be managing really needs.
👉 Have the demands shifted?
👉 What does success look like in this role today?
👉 What kind of skillset will genuinely add value?
If you’re vague on what success looks like, or you get caught up in the need to act fast, you may end up making the wrong hire.
Things to get clear on before hiring:
✅ What will this person own, solve, or improve?
✅ What does the portfolio need in a PM?
✅ What type of experience is essential and what can be trained?
✅ What are the non-negotiables and what are you willing to be flexible on?
✅ What kind of attitude, personality and behaviours are you looking for?
✅ What does this role look like in 12 – 18 months?
When you’re clear on what you’re looking for, the right candidate becomes easier to identify.
It also brings consistency, especially if multiple people are involved in the hiring process.
Everyone’s aligned on the key criteria, working from the same understanding of what the role really needs. That clarity helps ensure fair, objective decisions across all candidates.
