Interviews aren't just about proving you're right for the role, they're about figuring out if the role is right for you too. Make sure you engage, ask questions and trust your gut.
Here are a few tips that will serve you well ahead of and during your interview...
📝 Do your research – Know who you’re meeting. Research the company, the people interviewing you, and their recent updates. Check out their website, social media, and any press releases. Ask your Recruiter what insight they can share too. The more you know, the more confident and prepared you’ll feel.
💡 Tip: Prepare conversation starters based on what you’ve learned. “Congratulations on being shortlisted for the ACE Awards! Will you and the team be attending the event?”
📝 Identify key skills needed – Make sure you’re clear on what the Hiring Manager is looking for. What does success in this role look like? What skills and experience will you need to showcase? Think ahead about examples from your career that demonstrate your suitability.
💡Tip: Don’t be afraid to ask the interviewer(s) during the interview, too. “From what I know about what you’re looking for, I believe X, Y and Z skills will be essential. I’ve *insert relevant example here*, but I’d love to hear more from you, what do you believe would also be key when it comes to being successful in this particular position?"
📝 Be prepared – Think about the likely questions you'll be asked and how you'll answer them.
💡Tip: Knowing the size of your current portfolio as a Property Manager is a must and you need to be honest about this. A lot of interviewers will follow up on this after so make sure it checks out!
📝 Ask thoughtful questions – Questions aren’t only a great opportunity for you to dig deeper or find out the answers to anything that was not discussed, they’re a chance to demonstrate interest, engagement, and initiative. The right questions show you’re thinking ahead and genuinely interested in the opportunity.
💡E.g. “I’m really keen to upskill and gain industry qualifications for credibility as a Property Manager. Is this something you encourage and what support do you offer as a business with obtaining qualifications?”
And finally…
👉 Avoid speaking negatively about previous employers – it never lands well.
👉 Be yourself! Authenticity goes a long way.
Good luck!
