In high-pressure, highly emotive, demanding professions like Block Management, burnout is becoming more common. In fact, I think we’ve seen a real spike in burnout levels across over the last few years.
Burnout presents itself in physical, emotional and behavioural symptoms. From feeling exhausted to feelings of overwhelm and anxiety to difficulty concentrating.
Is your team thriving or just surviving?
Because if your team is constantly overworked, overwhelmed, and running on empty, it’s not just your people who suffer (and that’s serious enough on its own) – your business does too. You’ll struggle to not only retain but attract. Candidates can spot a burnt-out business from a mile away and the best ones won’t apply.
Does the reality of working in your business reflect the balance you promote in your job ads?
A few things you can do to ensure you’re setting the right tone and working to prevent burnout in your workforce…
✅ Review workloads – including Property Managers’ portfolios. Is this a manageable workload? Are they constantly firefighting? What impact is this having on not just that member of your team but your customers too?
✅ Consider your business’ approach to balance – are the business leaders actually taking time off and setting the tone for balance? Do you have a Wellbeing Programme? Employee Assistance Programme? What action do you take to check in with your team regularly and offer support?
✅ Consider what happens to someone’s workload when they do take annual leave. Nobody should have to “earn” time off by working double before and after a holiday. A lot of people actually put off taking a break due to the overwhelm of returning to 500 emails after a week off. What do you have in place to encourage team members to take a break without the dread of working 16 hour days to catch up when they return?
Actions don’t have to be huge. Small, consistent efforts make all the difference.
