Navigating Counter Offers (Candidate Edition)

You’ve accepted a new role.

You’re excited. Nervous. Ready for change.

And then… your current employer suddenly makes a counter offer.

More money. A new title. Promises of change.

It’s flattering and it’s tempting. Of course it is.

Here’s the thing:

A counter offer rarely changes what made you want to leave in the first place. Most people who accept a counter offer end up leaving within 6 months.

I’m not saying a counter offer is always the wrong choice. For some, it genuinely might be the right move. But it’s important to pause, strip back the emotion, and look at what’s really right for you and your career. Something made you start looking in the first place.

Does the counter offer truly address that?

Ask yourself:

✅ Am I staying for genuine change or short-term comfort?
✅ Is there a reason it took for my resignation to trigger a response? Had I tried to address my concerns with my employer before? Was I open and honest with them? Is there something I could do to ensure I communicate concerns more effectively if I stay?
✅ Does this offer align with my long-term goals?

And whatever you decide — make sure it’s for you. Not guilt. Not pressure. You.
