The Role, The Reality and The Road Ahead

Managing expectations during the hiring process is crucial.

More than ever, we’re hearing candidates say, “I was mis-sold the role.”

The gap between what’s promised and what’s real is costing employers good people… fast. Some are looking for new positions within their first week!

If you want stronger retention rates, consider asking yourself…

Is the way we’re describing the role, and our business, truly accurate? 🤔

It’s easy to let your passion for the business, vision for the future and the best parts of your culture lead the conversation during interviews. But what’s it actually like to be in this role, right now?

Sometimes, that answer isn’t clear. If the vacancy is due to someone leaving – did you carry out an exit interview? Use that insight to shape realistic expectations for candidates and consider whether there’s issues that need to be addressed before a new hire starts.

If you find that’s the case, communicate this too.

Because when a new hire walks in thinking the role is one thing, and the reality feels completely different? Trust feels broken. Motivation drops. Your new hire can start mentally checking out before they’ve properly settled in.

Be clear and honest about:

👉 The true nature of the role – the portfolio, the workload, etc.

👉 Any current challenges – in the portfolio, with systems, staff gaps, client pressures, workload, etc.

👉 What’s going on in the business / team at the moment

We think it’s fair to say no Property Manager expects to walk in to manage a portfolio where leaseholders bring them cake on Thursdays, clients send flowers weekly, and everything runs itself whilst the PM sits back, relaxes and deals with 10 emails per week.

What matters is that you are upfront, communicating any current challenges. It matters that you're honest about where things stand, and you're prepared to support your new hire in making the role manageable, sustainable and as enjoyable as possible in a supportive business.

That honesty builds trust. It’s what’ll help you retain your new hires.
